Hurt as a cyclist or pedestrian? As a vulnerable road user, the law is generally on your side

If a driver's actions caused a collision that injured you while cycling or walking, we'll help you understand your options. This is a specific type of road traffic accident, and we've built our approach around what matters most for cyclists and pedestrians.

Dealing with an injury is hard enough without navigating a legal process on top of it. We take that off your plate. We handle the legal work, gathering evidence, dealing with insurers, negotiating your settlement, while you focus on recovering.

We only take on claims we genuinely believe in. If we say you have a case, you can trust that's a considered view, not a sales pitch. This page sits alongside our broader road accident guidance, which covers claims for drivers and passengers.

What kinds of accident do we handle?

  • Cyclists struck by a vehicle

Including situations where a driver failed to see or give way to you at a junction or when overtaking.

  • Pedestrians struck by a vehicle

On a crossing, a pavement, or elsewhere a driver should have taken more care.

  • Rental e-bike accidents

Bikes from schemes such as Lime and Forest. See our rental e-bike claims page.

  • E-scooter accidents

Rental scheme and privately-owned scooters. See our e-scooter claims page.

  • Poor road or cycle lane maintenance

Where a hazard in the road surface or cycling infrastructure contributed to the accident.

  • Hit and run incidents

Where the driver left the scene, we can advise on how a claim may still be possible.

What if I was partly at fault?

Partial fault doesn't necessarily prevent a claim. Where responsibility is shared, compensation may simply be reduced proportionally. This is called contributory negligence. It's always worth asking rather than assuming you don't have a claim. To be clear, there's no legal requirement to wear a cycle helmet in the UK, so not wearing one doesn't itself affect your right to claim.

Rental e-bikes and e-scooters

Claims involving rental e-bikes and e-scooters are a distinct and evolving area, and liability can sit with the rider, the scheme operator, or occasionally a local council, depending on what actually caused the accident. Both now have a page of their own, because the answers differ enough that running them together was doing neither justice.

If you were riding your own e-bike within the normal power limit, it is treated as a bicycle, and this page is the right place to start.

What you could receive

Compensation for a cycling or pedestrian accident claim typically covers two things: general damages, for the pain, suffering and impact on your life, and special damages, your actual financial losses such as lost earnings, medical costs, or travel to appointments, and repair or replacement of a damaged bicycle where relevant.

We'll talk you through what's realistic for your specific situation once we've reviewed the details. We won't overpromise, and we won't quote a figure before we've properly understood your case.

How does a claim actually work?

Four stages, and you always know which one you're in.

  1. 01

    Initial consultation

You tell us what happened. We listen, ask the right questions, and give you a straight view on whether your claim has merit. This is free, with no obligation to proceed.

  2. 02

    Investigation

We gather evidence, medical records, photographs, witness statements, and where relevant, dashcam or CCTV footage, and build the strongest possible case on your behalf.

  3. 03

    Negotiation

Most cycling and pedestrian accident claims settle without going to court. We negotiate directly with the driver's insurer to reach a fair settlement.

  4. 04

    Resolution

Once agreed, your compensation is paid. We'll explain exactly how our fee is calculated before you agree to anything, in line with the funding terms below.

Don't leave it late

How long do I have to claim?

Most cycling and pedestrian accident claims must be brought within three years of the accident, or three years from the date you first connected your injury to the accident. For children, that three year clock starts on their eighteenth birthday.

If you're not sure whether you're still within the time limit, contact us. We'll tell you quickly.

The money side

What will it cost me?

Nothing upfront. Where a no win, no fee agreement applies, our fee comes from your compensation only if the claim succeeds, and it's set out in full, in writing, before you agree to anything.

  • We'll explain the funding options available for your claim, which may include a conditional fee (no win, no fee) arrangement, clearly and in full before you decide whether to proceed.
  • Our service is no win, no fee, so there is nothing to pay up front and nothing to pay if your claim does not succeed. We look after the costs of running your claim, and where it is appropriate we put insurance in place so that you are not left owing your opponent's costs if the claim is lost. If your claim succeeds, a fee is deducted from your compensation, as it is at most firms, and we explain it in full, in writing, before you agree to anything.
  • A cancellation fee may apply if you withdraw outside the 14 day cooling off period. Full details will be provided before you sign anything.
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the driver's details to make a claim?

It helps, but it isn't essential to get started, particularly in hit and run situations. We can advise on what's realistic to establish.

What if the driver left the scene?

It may still be possible to bring a claim, including through the Motor Insurers' Bureau in cases where the driver can't be traced or wasn't insured. Get in touch and we'll advise on your specific situation.

Do I need to have been wearing a helmet to claim as a cyclist?

No. There's no legal requirement to wear a cycle helmet in the UK, and not wearing one doesn't remove your right to claim.

What does "vulnerable road user" mean?

It refers to road users, like cyclists and pedestrians, who have less protection than someone in a vehicle, which is often reflected in how liability is assessed.

Can I claim if I was injured by a Lime bike or other rental e-bike?

Yes, this is treated much like any other road traffic accident. We'll look at what caused the collision and whether the rider, the scheme operator, or another party was responsible.

Will my claim go to court?

Most cycling and pedestrian accident claims settle through negotiation, without ever reaching a courtroom.
